LOYALTY TO HASANKEYF

Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic
Ankara - Turkey

Mrs. Angela Merkel
Chancellor of the German Federal Republic
Berlin - Germany

Mr. Alfred Gusenbauer
Chancellor of the Austrian Republic
Vienna - Austria

Mr. Moritz Leuenberger
Bundespräsident der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft
Bern - Switzerland

There are millions of world citizens who value law, culture, history and nature; I am one amongst them. I perceive these values as the most substantial legacies to be transmitted to the future, rather than economics and energy. No monetary or energy unit can be an excuse to remove my ties to these values because, due to my belief in these, I pay taxes, live in the social structure and use my voting rights.

I oppose Ilısu Dam due to its damages to law, culture, history and nature that are unacceptably great. The Turkish Government's desire to realise this project is a historical mistake. At the same time, the German, Austrian and Swiss governments' support to the project is contradictory to human and natural rights that these governments normally defend.

Nevertheless, I still believe that the German, Austrian, Swiss and Turkish governments value law, culture, history and nature as much as I do. To maintain my ties to these values, I show my loyalty to Hasankeyf.

I hope that your governments too will reject firmly the initiatives of certain private enterprises and lobby groups that disregard these values.

Hoping that you, the heads of your respective governments, will show loyalty to Hasankeyf and the Tigris Valley, I plea two things:
1- German, Austrian and Swiss Governments: Do not provide financial support to the Ilısu Dam.
2- Turkish Government: Cancel the Ilısu Dam. Take the leadership for developing a new vision that offers to humanity the historical and natural wealth in Hasankeyf and Tigris Valley through tourism investments.

Ensuring the survival of Hasankeyf and the Tigris Valley will provide more energy to the Turkish people and the world.

Sincerely,
